Thomas Binford, a 42-year-old resident of North Chicago, Illinois, died on May 20, 2023, as a result of a shooting incident. The incident occurred in the 1400 block of Cypress Avenue in North Chicago, where Binford and an 18-year-old man were shot outside an apartment building around 7:35 p.m. on the evening of the shooting.
Upon arrival, officers from the North Chicago Police Department and the North Chicago Fire Department found Binford unconscious and not breathing. He was immediately transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead. The autopsy performed by Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek confirmed that Binford died from a gunshot wound.
The second victim, an 18-year-old North Chicago man, was also transported to an area hospital and his condition was later stabilized. The preliminary investigation indicated that the shooting was targeted and not random. The shooters fled the scene immediately after the incident, and over 20 shots were fired, as evidenced by the numerous shell casings found at the scene. A sedan at the scene had its windows shot out and bullet holes on the outside of the car.
The North Chicago Police Department requested assistance from the Lake County Major Crime Task Force to aid in the investigation. As of the latest reports, the investigation remains ongoing, with no suspects identified or arrests made.
