James Hartley Pagliotti, a 28-year-old Police Officer III with the Los Angeles Police Department, tragically lost his life on June 22, 1987. Officer Pagliotti was engaged in a plainclothes operation with other officers, following a burglary suspect. During this operation, they observed a narcotics transaction at the intersection of Astoria Street and Bromont Avenue.
As they exited their unmarked vehicle to approach the suspects, a juvenile offender opened fire with a semi-automatic handgun, fatally wounding Officer Pagliotti. Despite his injuries, Officer Pagliotti managed to return fire, hitting the assailant in the chest.
The juvenile offender responsible for Officer Pagliotti's death was apprehended and subsequently denied parole multiple times, including in March 2005, February 2010, May 2017, and May 2022. The offender's next parole hearing is scheduled for May 2025. Officer Pagliotti's death was a significant loss to the Los Angeles Police Department, where he had served for five years. He was survived by his parents, brother, and fiancée.
