Preston Tate, an inmate at Corcoran State Prison in California, died on April 2, 1994, under controversial circumstances that led to significant legal and media scrutiny. Tate, a member of the East Coast Crips prison gang, was placed in the Security Housing Unit (SHU) at Corcoran, a facility known for housing some of the most dangerous criminals.
