On July 2, 2024, at approximately 6:30 p.m., Corcoran Police Department officers responded to reports of a vehicle collision near Dairy and Hanna Avenues in Corcoran, California. Upon arrival, they discovered 40-year-old Jason Pico unresponsive inside the crashed vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that Pico had been shot prior to the crash. Through investigative efforts, 27-year-old Alex Barrera was identified as the primary suspect. On July 10, 2024, at around 11:00 p.m., the Central Valley Regional SWAT team executed a search warrant at Barrera's apartment on the 1700 block of Dairy Avenue, leading to his arrest. Barrera was subsequently booked into the Kings County Jail on a murder charge and is being held without bail.
On July 16, 2024, Barrera pleaded not guilty to the murder charge during his arraignment. The motive behind the shooting has not been publicly disclosed, and the investigation remains ongoing.
