However, it took nearly a decade to bring charges against two other suspects, Deng Phethvilay and Keooudone Somphonphakdy. In 2015, both men pleaded no contest to manslaughter and were sentenced to six and nine years in prison, respectively. The plea deal, which avoided a trial on first-degree murder charges, was met with dissatisfaction by Chan's family, who felt the sentences were too lenient given the nature of the crime.
