Ryan Patrick Bonaminio, a 28-year-old police officer from Riverside, California, tragically lost his life on November 7, 2010. Officer Bonaminio was engaged in a foot pursuit in Fairmount Park when he encountered a suspect involved in a hit-and-run accident. During the chase, Bonaminio slipped and fell, at which point the suspect, Earl Ellis Green, struck him on the head with a metal pipe and disarmed him.
Despite Bonaminio's pleas, Green shot him twice in the head with the officer's own service weapon. Bonaminio was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident.
The investigation into Bonaminio's death led to the swift arrest of Earl Ellis Green, who was apprehended two days later. Green, a parolee with a lengthy criminal history, had been arrested 13 times prior and was on parole for a previous crime at the time of the murder. The case against Green was robust, with substantial evidence linking him to the crime, including his possession of the stolen semi-trailer truck involved in the hit-and-run.
In May 2012, Green was convicted of first-degree murder for the killing of Officer Bonaminio. The jury recommended the death penalty, a decision that was upheld by the judge in June 2012. Green's conviction and sentencing brought some measure of justice to Bonaminio's family and colleagues, who remembered him as a dedicated officer and a decorated military veteran. Bonaminio had served with the Riverside Police Department for four years and had completed two tours in Iraq as a military policeman.
The community of Riverside honored Bonaminio's memory by renaming a local park, Ryan Bonaminio Park at the Tequesquite Arroyo, in his honor. His death highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and underscored the importance of community support for those who serve and protect. The case remains a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by police officers and the enduring impact of their service on their communities.
