Derrion A. Thomas, a 20-year-old resident of Riverside, California, tragically lost his life on October 26, 2020, in a violent incident that stemmed from a car-to-car shooting. The events leading up to his death began two days earlier when Sharon Mayweather, a relative of Thomas, was released from the downtown Riverside jail and became intoxicated at a Motel 6. During her stay, she had a hostile exchange with Steven Daniel Carrillo, a documented member of the Eastside Riva gang, who was also staying at the motel. This confrontation set the stage for the fatal encounter.
On the night of October 26, Thomas and his cousin Isaiah Smith were preparing to drive to pick up food, with Mayweather trailing behind. They encountered Carrillo again, leading to another confrontation. Mayweather informed Thomas and Smith that Carrillo had threatened her, but they doubted her claims and ushered her into their car. Incensed by the public challenge, Carrillo pursued them in his vehicle. The chase escalated as they raced through traffic lights, eventually reaching the Food4Less grocery store parking lot. Carrillo pulled alongside their car and shouted profanities, prompting Thomas to fire up to 11 rounds at Carrillo with a semiautomatic handgun. In response, Carrillo returned fire, fatally wounding Thomas.
The investigation into Thomas's death led to the arrest and subsequent conviction of Steven Daniel Carrillo. In May 2024, Carrillo was found guilty of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and special circumstance allegations, including killing for the benefit of a criminal street gang and perpetrating a hate crime. He was also convicted of sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations. During the sentencing hearing, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Jerry Yang imposed a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
