On June 3, 2017, at approximately 7:12 p.m., Baltimore Police officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 600 block of South Payson Street in the city's Southern District. Upon arrival, they discovered 28-year-old Robert Smith Jr., a male resident of Baltimore, Maryland, suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
