Robert Smith Jr., 28, a Black man from Baltimore, was spending a Saturday evening inside a vehicle when violence found him on South Payson Street. Just after 7:12 p.m. on June 3, 2017, police were dispatched to the 600 block of South Payson Street after reports of gunfire, and they arrived to find him suffering from gunshot wounds. Medics rushed him to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
