On April 1, 2016, Neal Christopher Perez-Melo, a 27-year-old man, was fatally shot in the early hours of the morning in the Visitacion Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. The incident occurred at around 2 a.m. outside a residence on Teddy Avenue. Witnesses reported that Perez-Melo was shot multiple times in the torso and was then rushed to the hospital by three men in a silver BMW. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries a few days later, turning the shooting into a homicide case.
The location of the shooting became a significant point of interest, as it was the site of a police raid involving Stanislav Petrov, a figure connected to a controversial incident in November 2015, where he had been beaten by Alameda County deputies. Despite the proximity of the shooting to the raid and Petrov's subsequent arrest, authorities have stated that the shooting of Perez-Melo was not connected to Petrov's case. The FBI and the San Francisco Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, but as of now, the case remains unresolved, leaving many questions unanswered.
Perez-Melo's death marked the 11th homicide in San Francisco in 2016, highlighting the ongoing challenges the city faced in addressing violent crime.
