On the evening of October 10, 2017, in the 1600 block of Aisquith Street in Baltimore, Maryland, the life of 21-year-old Demetrius Mitchell, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. Responding to a report of a shooting at approximately 7:37 p.m., Baltimore police officers arrived at a chaotic and desperate scene. They, along with the victim's own family members, attempted to render aid to Mitchell, who had sustained a gunshot wound to his throat.
Despite their efforts and his rapid transport to Johns Hopkins Hospital, his injuries proved fatal.
Witnesses at the scene provided crucial early information, stating that the suspect, Chaunisty Wallace, had fled the area by cutting through a neighbor's home. This initiated a manhunt for Wallace, who managed to evade authorities for several months. His flight from justice led him through several southern states as he attempted to escape responsibility for the killing of Demetrius Mitchell. The search for Wallace concluded when U.S. Marshals tracked him down and arrested him in Ohio.
Chaunisty Wallace, described as a repeat offender with multiple prior convictions for narcotics and firearm offenses, was brought to trial for the murder of Demetrius Mitchell. The prosecution presented its case, and a jury found Wallace guilty of second-degree murder. In addition to the murder charge, he was also convicted of using a handgun in a crime of violence, wearing, carrying, and transporting a weapon, and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. For these crimes, Wallace was sentenced to a total of 75 years in prison, bringing a measure of closure to the violent end of a young man's life.
