A mother of five's body is discovered along a hiking trail
On the evening of August 5, 2023, Rachel Morin, a 37-year-old mother of five, embarked on a familiar walk along the Ma and Pa Trail in Bel Air, Maryland. When she did not return home, her boyfriend reported her missing. The following day, her body was discovered in a drainage ditch near the trail after a search. An autopsy would later reveal that she had been brutally assaulted, suffering from 15 to 20 blows to the head, and her death was ruled a homicide caused by a combination of strangulation and blunt-force trauma.
The investigation into her murder launched a nationwide manhunt. DNA evidence collected from the crime scene was linked to a home invasion and assault that had occurred in Los Angeles in March of that same year. This crucial piece of evidence eventually led authorities to Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez, a 23-year-old man from El Salvador. Investigators determined that Martinez-Hernandez had illegally entered the United States in February 2023, after a warrant had been issued for his arrest in connection with a murder in his home country. He had been apprehended and deported three times in early 2023 before successfully entering the U.S.
After a 10-month search, Martinez-Hernandez was arrested in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was subsequently extradited to Maryland to face charges for Rachel Morin's death. His trial began in April 2025, during which the prosecution presented compelling evidence, including the DNA match. After a short deliberation, the jury found Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez guilty of first-degree murder, first-degree rape, third-degree sexual assault, and kidnapping.
In August 2025, Martinez-Hernandez was sentenced for his crimes. He received two back-to-back life sentences, one for the murder and another for the rape, in addition to 40 years for the sexual assault and kidnapping charges. The judge imposed the maximum sentence for each count, ensuring that he will serve his time in a Maryland prison and not be returned to El Salvador. The tragic case drew national attention and led to safety upgrades along the Ma and Pa Trail, including the installation of new security cameras.
