In the quiet suburban landscape of Prince George's County, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed three lives. On a late Friday afternoon, August 15, 2014, police were called to a home on Addison Road in District Heights, Maryland, for a reported shooting. Inside, they discovered a grim scene that would later be ruled a double murder-suicide.
The female victim was 43-year-old Angela Lynette Johnson of Oxon Hill.
Authorities determined that her estranged husband, 45-year-old Leroy Johnson Jr., also of Oxon Hill, fatally shot her and another woman, 42-year-old Zonita Monia Roberts of Smyrna, Georgia. After killing both women, Leroy Johnson Jr. then turned the gun on himself, taking his own life.
When officers first arrived at the residence, they found one of the women already deceased. Forcing their way inside, they discovered the other woman and Leroy Johnson Jr. critically injured with gunshot wounds. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to their injuries shortly after. The preliminary investigation swiftly pointed to a domestic motive behind the shocking violence.
The investigation concluded that Leroy Johnson Jr. was the sole perpetrator in the deaths of Angela Lynette Johnson and Zonita Monia Roberts, who was described as an acquaintance of Angela's. As the suspect was also deceased, the case was closed as a murder-suicide, leaving behind a community to grapple with the sudden and tragic loss.
