In the summer of 2016, a tragic event unfolded in District Heights, Maryland, forever altering the lives of several families. On June 24th, 50-year-old Carlina Renee Gray was fatally shot inside a home on Orleans Avenue. The violence of that day was not limited to her alone; it was a triple homicide that also claimed the lives of 55-year-old Jan Marie Parks and 60-year-old Allen Rowlett.
Two other individuals were wounded in the attack but survived.
The community was left in shock and fear, as the shooter or shooters remained at large in the immediate aftermath. Neighbors, unsettled by the brutal violence that had shattered the quiet of their neighborhood, were hesitant to speak publicly. Carlina Gray's sister remembered her as a caring and generous person, the one who held their family together and was always ready to offer a hot meal or a place to stay.

On June 29, 2016, authorities arrested 24-year-old Lawrence Sylvester Rogers Jr. of Capitol Heights in Washington D.C. He was subsequently charged with three counts of first- and second-degree murder for the deaths of Gray, Parks, and Rowlett. While the arrest brought a measure of relief to the grieving families and the wider community, the motive behind the deadly shooting remained unclear to investigators at the time. A vigil was held to remember the victims, where family and friends expressed their gratitude that a suspect was in custody.
