In the late afternoon of May 31, 2024, 14-year-old Khamya Ferrell was visiting a friend at an apartment in District Heights, Maryland, after school. A burst of gunfire erupted outside in the 6600 block of Atwood Street shortly before 2 p.m. Inside the apartment, Khamya was struck by a stray bullet. When officers from the District Heights and Prince George's County police departments arrived, they found the young female and a woman inside the apartment with gunshot wounds; a man was also found
shot outside.
All three victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. While the two adult victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and survived, Khamya Ferrell succumbed to her injuries five days later and was pronounced clinically deceased on June 5, 2024. Investigators quickly determined that Khamya was not the intended target of the shooting. The gunfire was the result of an ongoing feud, and the suspects had been targeting another group of people.
Months later, in early December 2024, the Prince George's County Police Department announced an arrest in connection with Khamya's death. Chance Waters, a 19-year-old from Hyattsville, was taken into custody and charged with first and second-degree murder, along with other related charges. Authorities identified Waters as one of four individuals involved in the deadly shooting. The investigation remains active as detectives continue their efforts to identify and apprehend the three other suspects who are still at large. A reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for information leading to their arrest.
