On May 31, 2024, at approximately 1:50 p.m., a shooting occurred in the 6600 block of Atwood Street in District Heights, Maryland. Fourteen-year-old Khamya Ferrell of Suitland was inside an apartment with a woman when both were struck by gunfire; a man outside the apartment was also injured. All three victims were transported to a hospital, where Ferrell was pronounced dead on June 5, 2024. The two adult victims survived their injuries.
