Christian Casillas, a 20-year-old resident of Oakland, California, tragically lost his life on the night of September 28, 2016. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. in the Elmhurst area of East Oakland, specifically in the 1900 block of Auseon Avenue. Casillas was in the neighborhood with some relatives to pick up another family member when a car drove by, stopped, and someone inside the vehicle began shooting at them. Casillas was struck multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A female relative who was with him sustained a graze wound to her arm but survived the attack.
The investigation into Casillas's death led to significant developments. On December 21, 2016, two Oakland residents, Abdiel Sesai Guerrero, 21, and Selvin Pena, 18, were arrested and charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, and shooting at an occupied vehicle. According to police statements, the suspects were in a green Hyundai that slowed down and stopped next to Casillas's car before opening fire. Both Guerrero and Pena confessed to the shooting during police interrogations. A third suspect was also arrested, although the district attorney's office did not immediately confirm their status.
The legal proceedings against Guerrero and Pena progressed over the years. In October 2022, both men pleaded no contest to the charges of murdering Christian Casillas and wounding his mother. They are scheduled to be sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. This case highlights the ongoing issues of gun violence in Oakland and the efforts of law enforcement to bring justice to the victims and their families.
