James J. Fenton, a 33-year-old police officer with the Oakland Police Department, tragically lost his life on January 4, 1908. Officer Fenton was patrolling the area of 7th Street and Pine Street when he encountered two men he suspected of burglary. These men had previously blown a post office safe near St. Jose two weeks earlier.
