Lorenzo Castrejon, a 22-year-old resident of Oakland, California, was tragically killed in a shooting on February 8, 2017. Castrejon was found inside a stolen Infiniti, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The investigation led to the arrest and charging of two ex-convicts, Ernesto Ferrer, 22, and Joel Garcia Lopez, 26. Both men were charged with murder, arson, being felons in possession of a firearm, and shooting at an inhabited dwelling. Ferrer faced additional charges for assaulting a police officer during an attempted escape on February 10, 2017. According to court documents, Ferrer and Garcia Lopez were identified as the shooters through witness statements and surveillance footage. The evidence indicated that after the shooting, Ferrer drove the Ford Fusion used in the incident to a gas station in Castro Valley, where he cleaned the car before setting it on fire in a remote area of San Joaquin County to destroy evidence. Garcia Lopez was similarly implicated in burning another vehicle linked to the crime.
Samantha Sandoval, who was allegedly with Ferrer and Garcia Lopez at the time of the shooting, was also charged with arson for her role in helping to burn the vehicles. The court documents revealed that Garcia Lopez had a prior felony conviction for domestic violence in 2014, while Ferrer had a 2016 conviction for receiving stolen property and was on probation at the time of the shooting. The case against the suspects was bolstered by their criminal histories and the substantial evidence gathered by the police, including the recovery of firearms from a motel room linked to Ferrer.
