Ki’yehz Brooks, a 16-year-old boy from Antioch, was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in East Oakland on June 9, 2022. The incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. near the intersection of 64th Avenue and Camden Street, just outside Concordia Park. Ki’yehz and his 18-year-old cousin had just gotten off a bus and were walking to a relative's home when a vehicle approached them, and someone inside opened fire with a high-powered rifle.
Ki’yehz, a student at Hayward High School, was shot in the head and died at the scene, while his cousin was wounded but survived after receiving medical treatment.
The Oakland Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting, but as of the latest updates, no arrests have been made, and the motive for the attack remains unclear. Homicide investigators have been actively seeking video surveillance footage and witnesses to help identify the shooter. The police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland have offered a reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator.
The community has been deeply affected by Ki’yehz's death. Hayward High School provided additional counselors to support students and staff coping with the loss. Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong expressed his condolences to the family and emphasized the need to address the violence plaguing the community. Ki’yehz's grandfather, who lives near the crime scene, voiced his sorrow and frustration over the senseless violence that claimed his grandson's life.
