The investigation into Avalos's death led to the arrest of two suspects. The first suspect, Billy Deon Williams, a 23-year-old identified as a gang member, was apprehended in Fresno in early March 2022. Williams was charged with the murder of John Avalos and was held in Santa Rita Jail in Dublin without bail. He was scheduled to enter a plea on March 30, 2022. Surveillance footage played a crucial role in identifying Williams, showing him brandishing a firearm at the onset of the conflict. Williams, who was on probation for a burglary conviction at the time of the shooting, was also injured during the gunfight.
The second suspect, Deyonne White, a 32-year-old man, was arrested on June 13, 2022. White faced multiple charges, including the murder of John Avalos, four counts of attempted murder, and illegal gun possession. At the time of the shooting, White was on parole for previous convictions related to a 2013 gang-related shooting in Oakland. He had been sentenced to 15 years in state prison in 2016 but was granted parole in 2020. Both White and Williams were injured during the shootout, which targeted an alleged rival gang member.
