Daesjhon Grayson, a 30-year-old Black/African American man, was shot and killed in Oakland on Mother’s Day, May 11, 2025. Just before midnight, officers were called to the 600 block of 16th Street near Jefferson Street in the Uptown area, where they found him with a fatal gunshot wound. He died at the scene. Earlier that same day, the city had already recorded another homicide, underscoring a violent 24-hour stretch downtown that also included a predawn shooting near the Fox Theater.
Police publicly identified the victim weeks later as Daesjhon Grayson. The identification tied him to the late-night Uptown shooting that had closed an already grim Mother’s Day for Oakland, placing the killing roughly ten minutes before midnight on May 11.
In mid-August, prosecutors charged two people in connection with Grayson’s death. Court records show that 25-year-old Zairy Rubio was charged with murder in the May 11 shooting. A second person was charged in a related count for falsely claiming to be the victim of an auto theft in what authorities say was an attempt to cover up the crime. As of those filings, the case centered on the charges and investigative record; no convictions had been reported.
