Vamshi Reddy Mamidala, a 27-year-old Indian immigrant, was tragically killed on February 10, 2017, in Milpitas, California. Mamidala, who had recently completed his master's degree from Silicon Valley University, was returning home from a part-time job when he was fatally shot in the garage of the Ilara Apartments. The incident occurred around 10:45 p.m.
when Mamidala encountered a carjacker, later identified as Stuart Ison Baronngaue, a 30-year-old man from Fremont with a history of drug addiction and an outstanding felony warrant for parole violation.
According to reports, Baronngaue had crashed his car nearby and fled on foot to the Ilara Apartments, where he attempted to steal a car at gunpoint from a woman in the parking garage. As Mamidala arrived, he was confronted by Baronngaue, who demanded his car keys and wallet. Despite complying with the demands, Mamidala was shot in the left eye and subsequently run over by his own car as Baronngaue fled the scene. Mamidala was pronounced dead at the scene by the responding officers.
The Milpitas police quickly apprehended Baronngaue a short distance away from the crime scene. He was arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on multiple charges, including murder, robbery, felony evasion, and his outstanding warrant. The case drew significant attention, with some speculating that it might have been a hate crime, although the primary motive appeared to be robbery.
The investigation revealed that Baronngaue had a troubled past, including a history of drug addiction and criminal behavior. The tragic death of Mamidala left his family in India devastated, as they had hoped he would return home soon to find a job and settle down. The case against Baronngaue proceeded through the legal system, with hearings and court proceedings to determine his guilt and appropriate sentencing for the heinous crime.
