Reggina Jefferies, aged 17, was tragically killed on June 14, 2016, while attending a vigil in downtown Oakland for two friends who had drowned over Memorial Day weekend. Jefferies, who was a talented dancer and about to start her senior year at high school, had just performed a praise dance at the memorial service earlier that day. The service was meant to commemorate her friends Josiah Pratt-Rose and Jamari Wilson, two teenagers who drowned after jumping from a boat at Woodward Reservoir without life jackets.
The vigil, held near 13th and Franklin streets in Oakland, became the scene of violence when an argument broke out nearby among a group of men, reportedly over a dice game. The argument escalated, leading to multiple men pulling out guns and firing into the crowd. Reggina Jefferies was among those caught in the crossfire. She and three others were shot, but sadly, Jefferies was the only fatality. She was transported to Highland Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. Witnesses described the chaotic scene, where moments of dancing and remembrance turned into horror as gunshots rang out, leaving people scrambling to find safety.
The community was left deeply shaken by Jefferies' death, which highlighted Oakland's persistent struggles with gun violence. Jefferies' mother, Onika Wilson, who spoke to her daughter just minutes before the shooting, has since pleaded for justice, urging anyone with information to come forward. Despite the high homicide rates in Oakland, the lack of suspect information or arrests in connection to this case has only added to the pain and frustration felt by the community, which continues to grieve the loss of yet another young life to senseless violence.
