Dariannia Johnson, a 16-year-old girl from Antioch, California, tragically lost her life on August 19, 2015, after being shot in East Oakland. The incident occurred on August 16, 2015, when Johnson was a passenger in a car on International Boulevard. The intended target of the shooting was a 26-year-old Oakland man who had been feuding with Samuel S. Freeman, a 31-year-old Oakland resident with a lengthy criminal history.
Freeman, a five-time felon, had been involved in a personal dispute with the intended target and decided to confront him on the night of the shooting.
Freeman followed the car carrying the intended target to the 2700 block of International Boulevard. When the vehicles stopped, Freeman retrieved an AR-15 assault rifle and fired 17 to 18 shots at the other man, who managed to escape unharmed. However, one of the bullets struck Johnson in the head as she sat in the rear passenger seat. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Johnson succumbed to her injuries three days later.
The investigation into Johnson's death led to the identification and arrest of Freeman. At the time of the shooting, Freeman was on probation for a 2011 conviction for possession of cocaine base for sale. His criminal record also included convictions for possession of drugs, possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of an assault rifle.
The legal proceedings against Freeman included a court appearance on November 23, 2015, where he was scheduled to enter a plea. He was held without bail due to the severity of the charges and his extensive criminal history.
