On September 15, 2023, 42-year-old Wing Yin Wong, a mother of two, was fatally struck by a stray bullet while asleep on her couch in her Oakland, California, home. The incident occurred in the city's Laurel District, specifically in the 3600 block of 38th Avenue. Authorities believe Wong was unintentionally hit during a shooting where suspects targeted another vehicle in the vicinity.
Following an extensive investigation, the Oakland Police Department announced on November 21, 2023, the arrests of two individuals in connection with Wong's death. The suspects, identified as 32-year-old Tramonn (or Traymond) Gray from Oakley and 35-year-old Alonzo Dyer from Oakland, were apprehended on November 16, 2023. Gray faces charges including murder, attempted murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, and shooting at an occupied vehicle. Dyer has been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and being a prohibited person in possession of ammunition.
Investigators have determined that the shooting stemmed from a conflict between the suspects and an unidentified individual driving through the area. Gray allegedly fired a rifle at a Chevrolet Trailblazer, with one of the rounds tragically penetrating Wong's residence and striking her. Authorities believe that at least three shooters were involved in the incident and are actively seeking additional suspects. The community's cooperation, including the provision of surveillance footage, has been instrumental in advancing the investigation.
Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao expressed condolences to Wong's family, emphasizing the profound loss and the city's commitment to addressing gun violence. Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price underscored the reckless nature of the violence and affirmed that such actions would not be tolerated, pledging to prosecute the defendants to the fullest extent possible. Authorities continue to urge anyone with information about the case to contact the Oakland Police Department's Homicide Section or the TIP LINE to assist in bringing all responsible parties to justice.
