Thirteen-year-old Talita Dixon was a bright and loving young girl who tragically lost her life on October 8, 1985. She had just celebrated her birthday and was described by her mother, Marsha Dixon Showers, as a special child who loved to sing and play with Barbie dolls. Talita had left her home to walk to school alone for the first time just days before her murder.
Her mother recalled having an unexplainable feeling of unease at the time.
Talita's body was discovered on a trail in Redwood Regional Park in the Oakland hills. She had been stabbed multiple times. Her murder was part of a series of killings that terrorized the East Bay area in 1985. Authorities later linked her death to Anthony McKnight, a former Navy sailor who was convicted of raping and attempting to murder multiple women between 1984 and 1986. McKnight was sentenced to 63 years in prison for those crimes. However, it wasn't until 1999 that DNA evidence connected him to the murders of five female victims, including Talita Dixon.
McKnight was convicted of killing Betty Stuart, 22; Diane Stone, 17; Talita Dixon, 13; Monique Davis, 18; and Beverly Bryant, 24. All five victims were sexually assaulted before they were killed. The method of attack was brutal and deliberate, with victims suffering stab wounds or fatal blows to the head. Talita's mother expressed deep pain over her daughter's death, recalling the shock of seeing her child's body with a broken neck and a dislocated arm.
Years later, McKnight died in prison, bringing a bittersweet sense of closure to Talita's family. Her mother reflected on the long wait for justice, expressing gratitude that she lived to see the day when her daughter's murderer was no longer on this earth. However, she also acknowledged that the wounds of losing Talita would never fully heal.
