On July 19, 2023, at approximately 4:45 a.m., 26-year-old Nicole Marcy was fatally shot in the 1200 block of 18th Avenue in East Oakland, California. Marcy, a Seattle native who had been residing in Oakland, was reportedly chased by the assailant before being shot at close range as she lay on the sidewalk.
The Oakland Police Department (OPD) responded to the scene and found Marcy suffering from gunshot wounds; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
A short time later, another victim arrived at a local hospital with apparent gunshot wounds.
The OPD initiated an investigation into the homicide, which was one of three separate shootings that day, resulting in four fatalities. The other incidents occurred earlier in the day, with a man found shot to death in a vehicle around 11:30 a.m. in the 2100 block of 106th Avenue, and a man and woman found shot to death at a residence in the 1100 block of 89th Avenue around 1:30 a.m.
Through diligent investigative efforts, including collaboration with the Violent Crimes Operation Center and the U.S. Marshals, the OPD arrested 36-year-old Victor Sledge in connection with Marcy's homicide. Sledge was charged with multiple offenses, including murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and violating terms of probation.
The arrest of Sledge provided a sense of relief to the community, which had been grappling with a surge in street violence. The OPD's swift action underscored their commitment to addressing violent crime and bringing perpetrators to justice.
