On the night of April 13, 2019, 24-year-old Hispanic male Daniel Jeremy Macias was found fatally shot in a vehicle parked at a shopping center in South Bakersfield, California. Responding officers discovered Macias with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. A postmortem examination confirmed that the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner was ruled a homicide.
Witnesses reported seeing a two-tone Dodge Ram truck speeding away from the scene around the time of the shooting. The Bakersfield Police Department released descriptions of two suspects: an 18-year-old Hispanic male with a thin build wearing dark clothing, and an 18-year-old Hispanic female with dyed red hair wearing a red and orange striped shirt.
On April 26, 2019, 18-year-old Christian Campos was arrested in connection with the shooting. He was driving the two-tone Dodge Ram truck identified by witnesses. Campos was charged with first-degree murder. During the investigation, authorities discovered that Campos's phone was in the area at the time of the shooting, and messages between Campos and Macias indicated they had recently met at the location where Macias was killed. Campos denied knowing Macias and being in the area that night.
In the subsequent trial, Campos was acquitted of first-degree murder but convicted of second-degree murder. The court sentenced him to 15 years to life for the murder conviction, plus an additional 25 years to life for firearm enhancements.
As of the latest available information, no other suspects have been arrested or charged in connection with the murder of Daniel Jeremy Macias.
