Eddie Raymond Bustamonte Sr., aged 45, tragically lost his life on September 27, 2021, in Bakersfield, California. The incident occurred around 10:39 p.m. on Jewett Avenue, where Bustamonte was found suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The Bakersfield Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the shooting, which led to the arrest of two suspects, Emil Alvary, 38, and Angelo Rodriguez, 24, both of Bakersfield.

The investigation revealed a complex web of personal relationships and criminal activities. According to court documents, Bustamonte's estranged wife was involved in an affair with Alvary, a known member of the Colonia Bakers street gang. On the night of the incident, Bustamonte's wife was on a video call with Alvary when Bustamonte entered the home and an argument ensued. Bustamonte took his wife's phone and left the house, shortly after which gunshots were heard. Bustamonte ran back inside, collapsed, and died from his injuries.

Both Alvary and Rodriguez admitted to being present at the scene but pointed fingers at each other as the shooter. Alvary claimed that Rodriguez, who was also on parole and tested positive for cocaine the following day, was the one who fired the shots from a light gray Ford Explorer. Surveillance footage and a ShotSpotter activation supported the timeline of events, capturing the vehicle near the scene at the time of the shooting. A search of Rodriguez's vehicle later uncovered a 9mm handgun, further implicating him in the crime.

The legal proceedings that followed saw both men charged with first-degree murder. However, in a plea agreement reached in June 2023, the charges were reduced to voluntary manslaughter. Alvary was sentenced to 15 years in prison, while Rodriguez received a 12-year term. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of personal conflicts and the pervasive influence of gang affiliations in violent crimes.
