A quiet Monday morning in east Bakersfield turned tragic on April 13, 2026, when gunfire erupted, claiming the life of 30-year-old Arthur Deray Ward. Kern County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the 600 block of Knotts Street, near the intersection with North Baker Street, at approximately 10:15 a.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered two men who had been shot.
Both victims were immediately attended to by emergency medical personnel and transported
to a nearby hospital for treatment. Tragically, despite the efforts of medical staff, Arthur Deray Ward died from his injuries at Kern Medical about half an hour after being shot. The identity and condition of the second victim have not been publicly disclosed by authorities, though it has been reported that he is recovering. The Kern County Sheriff's Office took 22-year-old Donterrence Brown into custody on Tuesday, April 15, 2026, in connection with the fatal shooting of Ward. The arrest was the result of a follow-up investigation conducted near California Avenue and Real Road. While an arrest has been made, law enforcement has not yet released a motive for the shooting.
