Landen O’Ryan Worthy, 19, a Black male from Bakersfield, was shot on the night of July 27, 2025, and died shortly afterward. Police were dispatched around 9:45 p.m. to the area near West High School; investigators later determined he was shot in the 4600 block of Roberta Way and died on Nimrod Court after officers found him gravely wounded. The Kern County coroner identified him as Landen O’Ryan Worthy of Bakersfield.
Homicide detectives took over the investigation as shell casings were found near Valhalla Drive and Roberta Way, and early reports offered no suspect description. Accounts from the scene described a crashed vehicle and an urgent, but unsuccessful, attempt to save the 19-year-old.
Within weeks, authorities identified a suspect. Records and local reports state that Marlow Keith Maize, 18, was arrested and accused of fatally shooting Landen O’Ryan Worthy. A homicide tracker maintained by a local news outlet lists Maize as the accused in the case.
Investigators described the killing as stemming from a meeting arranged over Instagram, with surveillance footage, cellphone data, and a palm print on Worthy’s car tying Maize to the scene, according to a broadcast report. In that account, Landen O’Ryan Worthy was found in a Chrysler 300 after the shooting on Roberta Way; Maize was charged with first-degree murder and held without bail as the case moved toward a preliminary hearing.
Earlier that summer, public arrest logs show that Landen O’Ryan Worthy was arrested by Bakersfield police on firearms allegations. These prior allegations are separate from and do not alter the facts of his death on July 27, 2025.
