Jaquan Leonard, age 21, was fatally shot on January 9, 2016, in Miami's Liberty City neighborhood. Leonard was found suffering from gunshot wounds at the 700 block of Northwest 65th Street. Despite being transported by Miami Fire Rescue to Jackson Memorial Hospital, Leonard did not survive his injuries. His death was one of three shootings that occurred in Miami on that same day, all within close proximity and within a few hours of each other. The Miami Police Department has been unable to establish a direct link between these incidents but continues to investigate each case individually.
Jaquan Leonard was a former student and football player at Miami Northwestern Senior High. Known for his dedication to his team, Leonard believed that football could provide him with opportunities beyond the inner city. However, like many youths, when the possibility of a sports career did not materialize, he faced challenges in finding an alternate path. His untimely death underscores the ongoing issue of gun violence in Miami, particularly in its Black neighborhoods. Community members, as well as former coaches, have called for more support for young people in the area to prevent such tragedies from recurring, pushing for measures like vocational education and stricter enforcement of gun laws.
The Miami Police Department has appealed for information that could lead to an arrest in Leonard's case, and Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of up to $3,000 for tips leading to a suspect. Authorities encourage anyone with information to come forward to help bring those responsible for this senseless killing to justice.
