Michael Ray Munns III, a 21-year-old resident of Morgan Hill, California, tragically passed away on January 12, 2020, following an incident that occurred on December 13, 2019. On that fateful night, San Jose police responded to a report of an accidental shooting in the 4000 block of Formby Court. Upon arrival, the officers found that the involved parties had already left the scene.
It was later determined that the victim, Michael Munns III, had been driven to a local hospital by the individuals involved in the incident. Despite receiving medical treatment, Munns succumbed to his injuries nearly a month later, marking San Jose's first homicide of 2020.
The investigation revealed that Cole Gregory Halvorson, an 18-year-old from San Jose, was a passenger in a vehicle with Munns and others when the shooting occurred. Halvorson was arrested at the hospital on the night of the incident and was charged with multiple offenses, including assault with a deadly weapon, negligent discharge of a firearm, possession of narcotics with a firearm, and possession of a loaded unregistered firearm. He was subsequently booked into Santa Clara County Jail. The case was presented to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office to determine if the charges against Halvorson would be amended following Munns' death.
