On the night of December 31, 1972, a young, Black, 19-year-old male police cadet named Alfred E. Harrell was nearing the end of his shift at the Central Lockup in New Orleans. With only five minutes remaining, his life was abruptly ended by a sniper's bullet. From a dark field 280 feet away, a man named Mark Essex fired a. 44 caliber carbine, striking and killing the young cadet who had been with the New Orleans Police Department for less than a year.
