Chelsea Ruby Pacheco, a 22-year-old pre-school teacher from Oceanside, California, tragically lost her life on June 4, 2022. Pacheco was a beloved teacher at KinderCare, where she was known for her dedication to her students, particularly the 2-year-olds she cared for. On the night of her death, Pacheco was a passenger in a car traveling near Bush Street and Archer Street in Oceanside. The vehicle she was in had an interaction with a pedestrian, later identified as Vicente Huerta.
As the car drove away, Huerta opened fire, and a bullet struck Pacheco. Her friends initially thought she was having a panic attack and did not realize she had been shot until it was too late. Despite efforts to save her, Pacheco was pronounced dead at Tri-City Medical Center.
The investigation into Pacheco's death led to the identification and arrest of Vicente Huerta. Huerta, a 27-year-old man, was apprehended in Mexico approximately two months after the incident. He faced multiple charges, including firing at an occupied vehicle and gang-related allegations. In his first trial, Huerta was convicted of these charges and received a sentence of 89 years to life in prison. However, the jury deadlocked on the murder charge, leading to a second trial. In the subsequent trial, Huerta was found guilty of second-degree murder and a gun allegation. He was sentenced to an additional 60 years to life, to be served concurrently with his previous sentence.

Pacheco's colleagues and students remembered her as a kind-hearted and joyful individual who brought happiness to those around her. A GoFundMe page was created by her co-workers to support her family and honor her memory. The page described Pacheco as "the sweetest, most lovable person you could ever meet with a big heart."

The conviction of Vicente Huerta provided some measure of closure, but the community continued to grieve the loss of a promising young life cut short by senseless violence.
