Jonathan Crawford, a 25-year-old Black man, is described in some online references as the victim of a January 2014 fatal shooting in Uptown New Orleans, in the 4500 block of South Robertson Street. But when the New Orleans Police Department publicly summarized the cold-case development years later, the department’s own statement identified a different victim name for that same incident, creating a basic conflict in the record that makes Crawford’s specific case details difficult to verify
from official reporting alone.
What can be traced clearly in public reporting is the shape of the homicide itself: officers were dispatched to South Robertson Street on a “subject down/man down” call, and they arrived to find a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, pronounced dead at the scene. In the first hours after the killing, news coverage described the victim as unidentified, with no motive released and little else said publicly beyond the late-night discovery in a front yard on that block.
A decade passed with the case still spoken of as a cold investigation, until mid-September 2024, when detectives in the NOPD Homicide Section’s Cold Case Unit obtained an arrest warrant for Gordon Lewis on one count of second-degree murder tied to that January 2014 killing on South Robertson Street. Police said Lewis was already in the custody of the Louisiana Department of Corrections in DeQuincy on unrelated charges, and that he would be extradited to Orleans Parish to face the murder charge.
