Jose King Jr., a 60-year-old Black man from New Orleans, Louisiana, died on Saturday, September 29, 2012.

In the days that followed, the public record that surfaced most clearly was the grief of a family suddenly missing its center. In the obituary published in The Times-Picayune’s notices, he is remembered first as a son—born to Lucille King and the late Jose King Sr.—and then as a husband and father whose absence would be felt in the routines of home life.
