Thomas Paulie Smith Jr., a 16-year-old from Mount Airy, Louisiana, tragically lost his life on December 17, 2022, while visiting family in Antioch, California. Thomas, affectionately known as 'Paulie,' was in the Bay Area with his mother, Nakia Banks, to spend time with relatives during the holiday season. On the morning of his death, Thomas and his cousin walked to Williamson Ranch Park.
Around 11:20 AM, multiple gunshots were reported, and Thomas was found suffering from several gunshot wounds near the park's parking lot. Despite the efforts of paramedics and his mother, who arrived at the scene and held his hand while praying, Thomas succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The Antioch Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting, focusing on a dark-colored sedan seen leaving the park at high speed. Witnesses reported that Thomas and his cousin had met with the occupants of this vehicle shortly before the shooting occurred. The police detained a 15-year-old juvenile at a nearby Walmart, who was found in possession of a loaded firearm. However, this individual was later determined to be an acquaintance of Thomas and was arrested on unrelated charges. The primary suspect or suspects involved in the shooting remain unidentified, and no arrests have been made in connection with Thomas's murder.
Thomas's mother, Nakia Banks, has been vocal about her grief and desire for justice. She described her son as a happy, typical teenager who enjoyed playing games, dancing, and was passionate about music and art. Thomas played the tuba and had a love for anime and video games. Nakia Banks has expressed her anger and frustration over the lack of progress in the investigation and has called for anyone with information to come forward to help bring those responsible to justice.
