Charles "Ruby" Stein, a 61-year-old loan shark from Manhattan, New York, was murdered on May 5, 1977. Stein was a well-known figure in the criminal underworld, particularly associated with the Westies, an Irish-American gang based in Hell's Kitchen, and the Gambino crime family. His death was orchestrated by James "Jimmy" Coonan, the leader of the Westies, who owed Stein a significant sum of money, reportedly around $50,000.
