In the early evening of a summer day, tragedy struck in the heart of Harlem, forever altering the lives of a Bronx family. On Sunday, June 27, 2021, at approximately 6:50 p.m., police responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at the intersection of West 136th Street and Lenox Avenue. Upon their arrival, they discovered 21-year-old Keyshawn Dominick Cureton with multiple gunshot wounds to his body.
Emergency medical services rushed Cureton to Harlem Hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced deceased.
Keyshawn, a male resident of the Bronx, was remembered by his family as a fun-loving individual with a great sense of humor who enjoyed fashion and spending time with his loved ones. Born in Harlem, he moved to the Bronx in 2011. He was a graduate of F.D.A. High School and had attended BMCC for a year. At the time of his death, Cureton was employed as a package handler for FedEx and had also worked sanitizing hotel rooms for COVID-19 patients. He had recently obtained his driver's license and was excited about the prospect of buying a car.
In the wake of the shooting, the New York City Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. Authorities asked for the public's assistance in identifying the individuals responsible for Cureton's death and released surveillance photographs of the unidentified males they were seeking in connection with the fatal shooting. As of the initial reports, no arrests had been made, and the investigation was ongoing.
