Joseph Anthony "Joe" Colombo, a prominent figure in organized crime, passed away on May 22, 1978, at the age of 54 in Newburgh, New York. Colombo's death was the culmination of a series of events that began with an assassination attempt on June 28, 1971. During an Italian Unity Day rally in Columbus Circle, New York City, Colombo was shot three times by Jerome Johnson, an African-American gunman.
