In the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City on the night of November 19, 1980, a tragic event unfolded that cut short the life of 23-year-old Rene Malute. This violent episode, which would come to be known as the West Street Massacre, was a targeted attack fueled by hatred. The perpetrator, Ronald K. Crumpley, a 38-year-old former transit police officer, began a shooting spree shortly before 11 p.m. His actions were indiscriminate, aimed at individuals he perceived to be gay.
