Thomas Schimenti Jr., a 36-year-old police officer with the New York City Police Department, tragically lost his life on August 17, 1979. Officer Schimenti was on duty when he was alerted by a woman about a bank robbery in progress at 100 Park Avenue. The suspect, wearing a gorilla mask, fled the scene on foot, prompting Officer Schimenti to give chase. As he pursued the suspect, two detectives in the vicinity joined the chase.
