In the spring of 1988, the life of 43-year-old Maxine Peterson was violently cut short in a hail of bullets in Queens, New York. On May 28th, while holding her infant child in her kitchen, Peterson was fatally shot. The brazen attack was believed to be an act of vengeance, allegedly in retaliation for a shooting carried out by her son earlier that same day.
The shocking nature of the crime, a mother gunned down in her own home, immediately drew significant attention.
The investigation into the death of the female victim led to the apprehension of two suspects, Gary Steadman and Raymond Blair. Both men were subsequently charged with second-degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon. The prosecution's case against Steadman and Blair hinged on the testimony of a single key witness, Tony Malloy, who identified the two men as the perpetrators. Malloy's credibility, however, became a central and contentious issue during the legal proceedings that followed. With a history of drug use and prior felony convictions, the defense relentlessly challenged his reliability on the stand.
Despite the concerns over the star witness's background, both Steadman and Blair were convicted for their roles in Maxine Peterson's death. However, the legal saga was far from over. It later came to light that the prosecution had not fully disclosed a leniency agreement they had made with Malloy in exchange for his testimony, a significant violation of the defendants' rights. This revelation led to the convictions being overturned on appeal, necessitating a new trial. The case was further complicated by the subsequent murder of John Shelton, a witness in the trial, who was gunned down in February 1990 to prevent his testimony. An 18-year-old, Michael Bethea, was later charged with Shelton's murder.
