In the winter of 1995, a horrific act of violence shattered the quiet neighborhood of College Point, Queens, claiming the life of 42-year-old Maria Esperanza Ramirez and five others in a brutal home invasion. The massacre, which unfolded in a condominium on 120th Street, was a crime of calculated cruelty that left a lasting scar on the community and the sole survivor who lived to tell the tale.
On the evening of January 7th, what began as a social gathering turned into a scene of terror.
Three men, later identified as Saul Angulo, his uncle Enrique Rodriguez, and Richard As-sali, forced their way into the apartment. Their motive was robbery, and their methods were merciless. Inside, they found Maria Esperanza Ramirez, along with her two daughters, 15-year-old Carla Lopez and 17-year-old Paola Lopez, who was eight months pregnant. Also present were 15-year-old Melinda Wynns, 28-year-old Alex DeJesus Calle Soto, and 30-year-old Pablo Gomez.
The hours that followed were filled with unimaginable horror. The intruders bound and tortured their victims before ultimately shooting them. The crime was one of exceptional brutality, with some victims being shot multiple times. Maria Esperanza Ramirez was found shot to death in a closet alongside another victim. Her daughters and their friends suffered similarly violent fates. The pregnant Paola Lopez was found with non-lethal knife wounds, indicating she had been tortured before her death.
The case was cracked thanks to the incredible courage of a lone survivor, Ana Figueroa, a friend of the Lopez sisters. Despite being shot in the face and having her throat cut, she managed to play dead and later provide crucial testimony to the police. Her detailed account of the events and her ability to identify the attackers were instrumental in bringing them to justice.
Following an intense investigation, Saul 'Cuba' Angulo, Enrique Rodriguez, and Richard As-sali were arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder, robbery, and weapons possession. The testimony of Ana Figueroa was the cornerstone of the prosecution's case, leading to the conviction of all three men. They were each sentenced to 170 years to life in prison, ensuring they would never again pose a threat to society. In a final chapter to this tragic story, two of the convicted killers, Saul Angulo and Richard As-sali, later died in prison.
