In a tragic turn of events, 15-year-old Wilta Wordsworth, a female resident of Far Rockaway, Queens, lost her life after being shot inside her seventh-floor apartment. The incident occurred around noon on a Friday when Wordsworth had friends over. One of her friends, a 15-year-old boy, had brought a gun to the residence and was reportedly playing with it when it discharged.
A single bullet struck Wordsworth in the face, lodging in the back of her neck.
Following the shooting, a frantic scene unfolded as one of Wordsworth's friends desperately sought help from neighbors, banging on doors and crying out for assistance. Emergency services were called to the Collier Avenue apartment, and the injured teenager was rushed to St. John's Hospital. Despite medical efforts, Wilta Wordsworth succumbed to her injuries and passed away early the next morning.
In the immediate aftermath, two individuals were seen fleeing the apartment building. Police were able to locate and take two 15-year-old boys into custody in connection with the fatal shooting. Both teenagers were subsequently arrested and faced charges of manslaughter, criminal possession of a weapon, and tampering with physical evidence. Due to their ages, their names were not publicly released by the authorities. The investigation suggested that the shooting was accidental, a result of horseplay with a deadly weapon.
