The investigation into Porter's death unveiled a story of betrayal deep
within his inner circle. Authorities identified his close friend and business associate, Alpo Martinez, as the person responsible for his murder. The motive was believed to be a dispute over money and drug territory. Martinez was subsequently arrested, charged, and convicted for the murder of Richard Porter, a tragic conclusion to their once-close partnership in the city's drug trade.
Porter's death was compounded by another family tragedy that had unfolded just weeks prior. On December 5, 1989, his 12-year-old brother, William, was kidnapped on his way to school. The kidnappers demanded a substantial ransom from Richard Porter. In a cruel and horrifying act, they sent a severed finger of the young boy to the family to prove their seriousness. Despite efforts to secure his release, William was also killed. His body was found on January 28, 1990, not far from where his older brother's body had been discovered. Further investigation revealed that Richard Porter's own maternal uncle, Johnny 'Apple' Porter, had orchestrated the kidnapping and murder of his young nephew in an attempt to extort money.
