On August 3, 1995, Patrolman Lee E. Barta of the Binghamton Police Department was tragically killed in the line of duty. At the age of 29, Barta was shot and killed while searching for a suspect who had absconded from a work-release program. The incident occurred when Barta, along with other officers, attempted to apprehend the suspect at a house on Liberty Street in Binghamton, New York.
