In the early morning hours of Saturday, August 8, 2026, the life of 29-year-old Tyshawn J. Hickman of Binghamton, New York, was tragically cut short. At approximately 5:45 a.m., while it was still dark, the sound of several gunshots echoed through the city's East Side near Montgomery Street and Whitney Avenue. Police officers who were already in the vicinity monitoring a nearby establishment, Pancho's Caribbean Kitchen, heard the shots and rushed to the scene.
Behind a commercial building, they discovered a grim scene: two men on the ground. One of them was Tyshawn J. Hickman, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his head and chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other man found alongside Hickman, a 35-year-old whose name has not been released by authorities, was unconscious and had suffered a serious head injury, though he had not been shot. He was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City with life-threatening injuries and underwent surgery. Hickman's longtime partner, Erianna Cooper, with whom he had a five-year-old daughter and a one-year-old son, had spoken to him on the phone just 90 minutes before the shooting and said he had been out with friends and everything seemed fine. Cooper and Hickman had known each other since they were 12 years old. In the wake of the tragedy, a memorial of candles and photographs was set up behind the building where he was found.
As of now, the investigation into Tyshawn J. Hickman's death is ongoing, and Binghamton police detectives are actively pursuing leads. Investigators have been canvassing the area for evidence and have enlisted the help of K-9 units to search the vicinity, including nearby railroad tracks. Several shell casings were recovered from the scene of the shooting. However, no arrests have been made, and police have not released any information about potential suspects.
