In the spring of 2009, a tragedy unfolded in Binghamton, New York, cutting short the promising life of Parveen Ali, a 26-year-old woman of Pakistani descent. On April 3rd, she was among the thirteen innocent victims of a mass shooting at the American Civic Association, a place dedicated to helping immigrants build new lives in the United States. Parveen herself had come to the U.S.
in 2001 with her mother and two brothers, filled with dreams of a brighter future.
Life in a new country presented its challenges, and Parveen met them with resilience, taking on various jobs at a gas station and a hotel. Her ambition burned bright as she diligently worked towards her high school equivalency diploma, with the ultimate goal of attending college and becoming a teacher. Her family remembers her as a cornerstone, a nurturing presence who was like a mother to her younger brother, Nadar. She was the one who encouraged him to pursue his own college education.
Recently having become a U.S. citizen, Parveen was filled with hope. She had begun the process of sponsoring her two younger brothers, who were still living in Pakistan, to join the family in America. Her dream was to reunite her entire family and provide them with a safe haven. Tragically, all of those dreams were extinguished on that fateful Friday morning.
The perpetrator of the horrific act was Jiverly Antares Wong, a 41-year-old man who had previously taken English classes at the center. After the shooting, he took his own life. In the wake of the immense loss, the community mourned the vibrant and caring young woman whose life was so violently and senselessly taken. A funeral service was held for Parveen and another victim at a local mosque, where family and friends gathered to grieve the profound loss of a woman who had so much more to give.
