In the spring of 2009, a tragedy unfolded in Binghamton, New York, cutting short the promising life of Parveen Ali, a 26-year-old woman of Pakistani descent. On April 3rd, she was among the thirteen innocent victims of a mass shooting at the American Civic Association, a place dedicated to helping immigrants build new lives in the United States. Parveen herself had come to the U.S. in 2001 with her mother and two brothers, filled with dreams of a brighter future.
