On a tragic night in Queens, New York, the hip-hop world lost a rising star. Tahliq Raymond Rogers, a 27-year-old male known to his fans as Freaky Tah, was fatally shot on March 28, 1999. He was a member of the popular rap group the Lost Boyz, serving as the group's hype man and promoter. The group was known for their energetic performances and had achieved significant success with a gold-selling album.
The evening of his death, Rogers was leaving a friend's party at a Sheraton Hotel in
Queens. In a devastating case of mistaken identity, he was ambushed and shot once in the head. The violence that claimed his life was rooted in a dispute that he had no part in. His killer, Kelvin Jones, was seeking revenge for the death of his own brother and mistakenly believed Rogers was a relative of the person responsible.
The investigation into Tahliq Raymond Rogers' murder led to the arrest of three individuals. Kelvin Jones, the gunman, eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. Two other men who were with Jones in a minivan at the time of the shooting, Rasheem Fletcher and Ryan Frith, were also arrested. Fletcher pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received a seven-year sentence, while Frith pleaded guilty to criminal facilitation.
The tragedy was compounded by an act of misguided vengeance. A friend of Rogers, Corey Bussey, wrongly believing a man named Roderick Paget was involved in the rapper's death, shot and killed Paget just three days later. Bussey was subsequently convicted of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon for this retaliatory act and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. This cycle of violence underscored the senselessness of the initial act that took the life of a beloved entertainer.
